LADY LAKERS OFF TO 5-1 START

The Women's basketball team has gotten off to a quick start even though they have been hit by injury, illness and family loss.

The Lady Lakers opened their season against #5 ranked Mohawk Valley. The team came away with a 90-74 loss. Even worse, the team lost returning starter Jordyn Eckman who tore her ACL and is lost for the season. The team rebounded and won their next 5 games. During this stretch though the team was hit by illness to several players. Coach Barrett has not been able to start the same lineup in any games so far this year. The team was also without one of its key players when a family member passed away recently.

The team returned only two players from last year's 24-6 team. With the loss of Eckman only Ashlee Langley(South Seneca) is left from that team. A starter last year, Ashlee averaged 10 points a game. This year's team consists of 16 players, a good thing because of all the illness. 13 players are Freshman and several have had to step up quickly. The team has been led by Shakista Woolfolk(Newark) who leads the team in scoring and rebounding. Helping out also is Katrina Davenport(Honeoye) a transfer from Damaen.

Players who have seen plenty of action so far are LaDonya Rolle(Rush-Henrietta) Genna Tripoli(Mexico), Christina Sawyer(Mexico), Jumayri Santiago(Aquinas), Brittany Harmon(Edison), Heather Virts(Newark), Brandy Earl(Oswego), and Samantha Race(Mexico). Also contributing to the team's success have been Margaret Infantino and Niki DeBell, both from Dansville, Lauren Diesenberg(Wayne) Faith Turnbore(Marshall), and Michelle Degman(Greece Olympia).

Three Freshman guards have also had an outstanding first half and will only get better as the season goes on. Ashlee Langley(South Seneca), Elly Disbrow(Penn Yan) and Jordyn Eckman(Frontier) have all moved into the starting line up and have contributed greatly to the success of the team.
