2009 SEASON REVIEW
Foals of the NJCAA, the FLCC women continued to bolster their record board, breaking six Laker records en route to an eighth-place finish at the NJCAA Division III National Championships at Alfred State. In the process of setting the 100-meter dash record (12.97), Jamaican native Heady Piearu bolted to second-place, the highest finish in the history of FLCC female sprinting. A week prior, Piearu attained gold at the NJCAA Region III Championships in the same event.
Emily Enright, a sophomore, earned All-American status for the second-straight season, this time in the 5,000-meter run. After missing nearly a month due to illness, Enright’s first race back was the National Championships where she placed second in the 5,000-meter run and fourth in the 1,500-meter run. Enright is the first-ever athlete in FLCC history, no matter the sport, to finish her athletic career with three All-American certificates. Enright finisher her two seasons on the team with records in the 1,500-meter, 3,000-meter SteepleChase, 5,000-meter run, and is a member of the 4x400 and 4x800-meter relay teams.
Piearu also set the school record in the 200-meter dash (26.68) while placing sixth at nationals. She then joined teammate Brooke Everdyke, Renee Smith, and Shannon O’Brien in the womens 4x100-meter relay, setting another FLCC record with a fourth-place finish in 52.38 seconds.
Everdyke, a freshman, broke the 400-meter dash record (61.85), and Smith set the record in the long jump with a 4.71-meter leap.
In just three seasons as a program, the Laker women have produced three National Champions, and have placed in the top-8 twice at the NJCAA Division III National Championships.
